What happens if the condom breaks if I am having sex with a partner who is HIV negative?
If you have been taking your medications every day and your viral load has been undetectable for more than six months, you don’t have to worry. The science is clear – there is almost zero chance of infection. Contact your doctor or nurse and talk to them about it.
If you are not taking your medications every day and don’t have an undetectable viral load, phone your HIV doctor or nurse as soon as possible. They can organise for your partner to quickly get PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).
PEP means taking medicines to treat possible HIV infection. PEP treatment has to start within 3 days after possible exposure to HIV.
Talk to a health professional about options or tests if you are worried about STI’s or pregnancy.
